Chapter Nine
The next day, Cole pulled into the parking lot of Malayaâs apartment complex. He was picking her up for the housewarming party, and if it werenât for her, heâd skip it. He wasnât in the mood to be around a bunch of lovey-dovey people.
After finding a parking space, Cole sat in his car and glanced around. It wasnât the best neighborhood, especially for a single woman, but Malaya insisted it was safe. She also liked that it was conveniently located to school. Still, he hated the area.
He climbed out of his Lexus and locked it as he continued checking out his surroundings. There were several guys hanging out on the front stoop of the ten-story brick building smoking and talking loudly. Rap music blared from somewhere inside the building, probably disturbing everyone inside.
Definitely not a place for a single woman.
If only sheâd go along with his marriage idea, she wouldnât have to worry about living in substandard conditions.
Cole nodded to the guys outside, then climbed the rickety stairs to the third floor. The tiled hallway appeared as if it hadnât been swept or mopped in weeks, and the dingy walls could stand a fresh coat of paint. All of that only added to his previous opinion of the place.
He stopped at the last door on the right and knocked. Seconds later, after undoing several locks, Malaya swung open the door.
âHi,â she said, a shy smile on her tempting red lips.
She was dressed in a flowy red dress that skimmed over her shapely figure, and black strappy three-inch heels covered her delicate feet. And God, whatever fragrance she was wearing had Cole wanting to bury his nose into the curve of her neck for a better whiff.
His gaze took in her outfit again and worked its way back up. She had removed some of her silver earrings and all of her bracelets. Also gone was her afro. Instead she had straightened her hair, and the long strands brushed her shoulders.
âYou donât like it.â It was more of a statement rather than a question, and the disappointment in her tone made Cole realize he was frowning.
âItâs not that I donât like it. Itâsââ
âItâs what?â she asked. âYou know what? Maybe you should come in.â She opened the door wider, and he crossed the threshold.
âThis,â he waved his hand up and down her body, trying to find the right words that could explain what he was thinking without hurting her feelings. âThis is not you. Itâs not your style.â
âOookay, but does it look all right for me to wear? My style isnât dressy enough. I figured that was why⦠Hold up. Why did you have the outfit delivered to me if you didnât like it?â
âI didnât haveâ¦wait. Is this one of the dresses you picked out when you went shopping?â
âYeah, but you should...â Malaya jammed her hands onto her hips. âIf you didnât send itâ¦â
âDani,â they said at the same time.
âI told her I couldnât afford it.â
âAnd when you wouldnât let me pay for the items, she mustâve taken it upon herself to purchase them,â Cole finished.
